Iberian Rugby League (LIR), formerly Liga Amateur Rugby (LAR)
The Iberian Rugby League (LIR) is the competition that was called Liga Amateur Rugby (LAR) until the 2025/26 season. It is run by the Spain Union Multisport association for clubs that want to play a regular league outside the federation circuit.

What it is
A rugby union league for amateur clubs
It was born in 2023 as the Liga Amateur Rugby to give regular competition to clubs left out of the federation calendar: small teams, without the structure or resources for a federation league, that wanted to play every few weeks against opponents of their level.
This season it is played in two groups, of five and four teams, between October and March, and the finals come in April. The association publishes the results of every round as the clubs report them.

History
From Liga Amateur Rugby to Iberian Rugby League
The league is changing its name because it is no longer played only in Spain. In 2025/26 Barbarians Dev took part, playing their home games at the Europa Sports Stadium in Gibraltar, and in 2026/27 Gib Barbarians have entered. Earlier seasons were played as the LAR and stay that way in the roll of honour.

2023/24
The Liga Amateur Rugby is born
First season: 27 matches and 141 players. Moguer Rugby Union beat San Roque 15-14 in the final.

2024
The association is founded
Spain Union Multisport is listed in the National Register of Associations to give the league a structure.

Bucaneros, champions
Seven clubs in the regular season. Bucaneros Rugby win the title by one point over Dragones de Zafra.

2025/26
Ten clubs and a finals stage
Two groups, semi-finals and a final. C.R. La Mar Badajoz win the league after winning all eight of their group matches.

Iberian Rugby League
The competition takes on its new name with nine clubs from Spain and Gibraltar.

What the association organises and what each club is responsible for
The association's role is set out in each season's Terms and Conditions, and it is short on purpose.

How to enter a club
Entry costs €50 per club and €5 per player, as a one-off payment per season.

Receive the paperwork
We send you the season's Terms and Conditions and the responsible declaration.
Sign and send
The club's representative signs the declaration, which states its insurance, and returns it with the entry form. The entry is not processed without it.
Into the fixtures
Once entered, the club goes into the season's fixtures and standings.
Frequently asked questions
What people ask us most about the league
Is the Iberian Rugby League a federation league?
No. It is a private, amateur competition. It is not part of, backed by or recognised by the Spanish Rugby Federation or any regional federation, it does not issue federation licences and its standings only count internally.
Does the league have insurance?
No. Each club must have its own cover and keep it for the whole season. If your club has no insurance, we have arranged accident insurance for rugby players.
Why has it changed its name?
Because it is no longer only a Spanish league: in 2025/26 a team playing its home games in Gibraltar took part and in 2026/27 Gib Barbarians have entered. It is the same competition, run by the same association.
Do the Liga Amateur Rugby seasons still count?
Yes. The 2023/24, 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons were played as the Liga Amateur Rugby and stay that way in the roll of honour, with their champions: Moguer Rugby Union, Bucaneros Rugby and C.R. La Mar Badajoz.
How does a club enter and how much does it cost?
By writing to the association. We send you the Terms and Conditions and the responsible declaration, which the club signs and returns with the entry form. It costs €50 per club and €5 per player, as a one-off payment per season.
Can under-18s play?
Players must be adults. If a club fields a minor, it must meet the authorisation and child protection requirements set out in the Terms and Conditions.
