Rugby gear chosen by people who play: boots, balls, protection and kit. What to check before you buy and where to buy it.

Buying guides

What to check before you buy

The basics of each category. The full guides, with the models we recommend and where to buy them, are published in News.

Rugby boots

  • Screw-in studs for soft natural grass and moulded studs for dry or artificial pitches.
  • Forwards: more support and studs for pushing. Backs: light, flexible boots.
  • Check whether the pitch you play on allows metal studs.

Balls

  • Size 5 for adults and youth players; sizes 4 and 3 for the school age groups.
  • The training ball, tough and cheap. The match ball, with better grip.
  • For a club, better in bulk: it works out cheaper per ball.

Protection

  • The mouthguard comes first, ideally one moulded to your mouth.
  • Headguards and shoulder pads, only if they carry the World Rugby approval label.
  • Ankle and knee supports, for anyone coming back from an injury.

Kit

  • Tight-fitting shirts that stand up to tugging: they are harder to grab.
  • Reinforced shorts and compression socks for matches.
  • For clubs: personalisation and delivery times before the season starts.

Training

  • Tackle shields and bags to work on contact safely.
  • Cones, bibs and an agility ladder for any session.
  • A pump with a pressure gauge: ball pressure matters.

Recovery

  • Foam roller and resistance bands for after the match.
  • Hydration and food before supplements.
  • The club's first aid kit: bandages, tape and instant cold packs.
