The Liga Amateur Rugby (LAR) becomes the Iberian Rugby League (LIR)

From the 2026/27 season, the Liga Amateur Rugby (LAR) is called the Iberian Rugby League (Liga Ibérica de Rugby, LIR). It is the same competition, run by the same association: only the name changes, and it changes for a specific reason.

Why the name is changing

The league was born in 2023 to give regular competition to clubs that were left out of the federation calendar. In the 2025/26 season a team from outside Spain took part for the first time: Barbarians Dev, who played their home games at the Europa Sports Stadium in Gibraltar and finished third. In 2026/27 Gib Barbarians are registered, and the name Liga Amateur Rugby no longer fitted: the competition is not played only in Spain any more.

“Iberian” describes what the league is today and what we want it to be: a competition open to clubs from the peninsula and its surroundings, where borders do not decide who can play.

What changes and what does not

• The organisation does not change. The league is still run by the Spain Union Multisport association.
• Its nature does not change. It is still a private, amateur competition, not affiliated to any federation.
• The name changes in the calendar, the standings and everything we publish.

Earlier seasons are still the LAR

The three seasons played so far, 2023/24, 2024/25 and 2025/26, were played as the Liga Amateur Rugby and remain so in the records, with their champions: Moguer Rugby Union, Bucaneros Rugby and C.R. La Mar Badajoz. The roll of honour, match reports and standings of those seasons still belong to the LAR.
